Southern Samity (Kolkata) emerged champions in the All-India Kalinga Cup Football Tournament, edging out Air India (Mumbai) 4-2 in the floodlit final, via tie-breaker at Barabati Stadium here today. Tie-break rule was applied after play in the regulation time ended in goal-less draw.
In the penalty shoot out, Southern Samity successfully executed four spot kicks against two by Air India to receive the top prize of Rs 3 lakh. Air India settled with the runners-up prize of Rs 2 lakh.
Paradip Port Chairman Subhransu Mishra handed over the trophy and cash prizes in the closing ceremony. Former India woman football captain Sradhanjali Samantary, Odisha Olympic Association secretary Asirbad Behera and Football Association of Odisha secretary Sanjay Behera were present on the occasion.
Police DG Prakash Mishra inaugurated the tournament in the presence of State Sports Director D V Swamy, Odisha Olympic Association secretary Asirbad Behera and Football Association of Odisha president Debashish Samantray.
Altogether 16 teams joined the tournament which is being Jointly organised by State Sports Department and Football Association of Odisha (FAO). Teams include eight from within the state and eight from outside. The champion team will get a cheque of Rs 3 lakhs and the runner-up side Rs 2 lakhs.
The eight outstation teams are: Bhawanipore Football Club, Aryans XI, Southern Samity (all Kolkata); Air India, Navy XI (both Mumbai), Vasco Sports Club (Goa), Tata Football Academy (Jamshedpur) and Quartz Football Club (Kerala).
Out of the eight state-based teams, Odisha Police, Jobra Durga Club, Rising Students Club and Sunrise Club (all Cuttack) qualified as the four semifinalists of the FAO First Division League, while Birla Tyres, Independent Sporting Club (Mayurbhanj), Government Sports Hostel (Cuttack) and Friends & Friends Club (Bhubaneswar) became eligible as the semifinalists of the FAO Inter-District Club Championship.
A tentative budget of Rs 40.37 lakhs has been estimated for the successful conduct of the tournament, which was started by former Odisha Chief Minister Biju Patnaik. Sports Department will to provide a grant of Rs 15 lakhs, while Odisha Cricket Association will give a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakhs. Odisha Mining Corporation, State Bank of India, Paradip Port Trust, National Aluminium Company, Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd and IDCO have assured their patronage.
